About PAAJELLA
Our purpose, focus and the people who take part.
What is PAAJELLA?
The Pan-African Association of Judges on Environment, Land and Labour (PAAJELLA) is a continental association of serving and retired African judges. It advances judicial excellence and strengthens justice responses through professional learning, exchange and knowledge sharing.
Which areas of justice does PAAJELLA focus on?
PAAJELLA works across environmental, climate, land, natural-resource and labour challenges, supporting comparative jurisprudence, judicial education, research and peer exchange.
Can academics, researchers and other stakeholders participate?
Yes. Academics, researchers, experts and other stakeholders may take part in programmes and forums. Participation in those activities does not confer membership; membership is governed by the PAAJELLA Constitution and procedures.
Membership
Eligibility, the application process and membership fees.
Who can become a member?
Judicial membership is for serving judges in African national, regional or other recognized judicial institutions, and retired African judges who meet the applicable requirements. Corporate membership is open to organisations and institutions whose objectives and activities align with PAAJELLA’s mandate. Honorary membership may be conferred for exceptional contribution, with conflict-of-interest safeguards.
How do I apply for membership?
Submit the required membership information and supporting documentation. PAAJELLA reviews each application against the applicable requirements. Successful applicants receive confirmation and membership information.
See the Membership page for details.
What are the membership fees?
| Fee | Judicial membership | Corporate membership |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance / admission | US$100 | US$2,000 |
| Annual membership | US$200 | US$2,000 |
| First-year total | US$300 | US$4,000 |
Fees are subject to the Association’s approved policies and may be reviewed.
What are the benefits of membership?
Members can connect with peers and institutions across Africa, exchange judicial experience and comparative jurisprudence, participate in specialised learning, attend masterclasses and dialogues, join thematic communities of practice, and contribute to research and knowledge development.
Programmes & partnerships
Ways to learn together and work with aligned institutions.
What kinds of programmes does PAAJELLA offer?
Activities may include judicial education and masterclasses, judicial exchanges, research and comparative jurisprudence, knowledge products, institutional advisory, and continental forums and dialogues.
How can an organisation explore a partnership?
Institutions interested in supporting judicial learning, comparative research, institutional development or continental knowledge exchange can send an expression of interest. Include the organisation’s name, contact person, proposed collaboration, area of interest, proposed contribution and timeframe. PAAJELLA reviews expressions of interest against its mandate, priorities and governance requirements.

Independence, privacy & contact
How PAAJELLA safeguards professional integrity and handles enquiries.
Does membership or a partnership imply endorsement?
No. Membership does not oblige members to endorse any position, policy or external organisation. Partners support PAAJELLA’s work but do not determine its judicial positions, professional standards or institutional decisions. Partnership arrangements are subject to due diligence, governance approval and conflict-of-interest safeguards.
How is information shared through membership applications handled?
Personal information collected through membership applications, administration and participation is processed for PAAJELLA’s legitimate institutional purposes, in accordance with applicable data-protection and privacy laws and PAAJELLA policies. Read the Privacy & Data Protection Policy.
